Wednesbury Cricket Youth Club

Following several weeks of hard work, the new youth club at Wednesbury Cricket Club opened its doors on Wednesday 28 September 2016. The project idea was developed following consultation with young people and the local community. The main message that was constantly being heard was that there was a lack of safe spaces for the young people within the area to go to. The idea of an open access youth provision was developed and welcomed by the local community. Partners came together to further develop the idea and identify suitable locations that are accessible to young people and possible funding opportunities. The project team was made up of Young People’s Services (engaging young people in the process), CANDO Officers, Local Ward Councillors, Neighbourhoods Team, and Police.

Funding was secured through the Wednesbury North Youth Offer. A suitable location was secured at Wednesbury Cricket Club that also opened up opportunities for use of the sports areas. This venue is also based within the local community. The Young People’s Services were asked to lead on the project and provide the youth work element to the project. Although the club opened on the 28 September, a more formal launch will be held later in the year that will be organised by the young people attending.

Cllr Elaine Costigan, Town Lead for Wednesbury and has been involved with the project from the start stated, “This is an amazing opportunity for the local young people to engage in a real positive activity. It has taken a lot of hard work by a lot of people, but really worth it and what is needed for the area”. The youth club opens every Wednesday 6.30pm – 8.30pm.
