Apprentices are building homes of the future in Smethwick working as plumbing and electrical apprentices.
They’re being supported by Sandwell Council’s Think Sandwell team, which recruits new apprentices and helps them find placements with local firms.
Ryan, Thomas, Cameron, Louis, Luke and Alex are learning their trades on the new Galton Lock development, where 181 new homes are being built. And skilled plumber Jonathon is working on the site after completing his apprenticeship on another site.
The lads, all aged between 18 and 21, are gaining experience and qualifications while they earn. Five are training with PAB Plumbing and two with Spectrum Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Ltd.
Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Paul Moore said: “It’s great to see young people learning on the job and developing skills that will see them develop great careers.
“The Think Sandwell team does a fantastic job supporting apprentices and the companies they work for. I’d also like to thank Countryside Properties for recognising the potential in these young people and giving them the chance to kickstart their careers in the construction industry.”
The £32m housing development, which is just off Mafeking Road, is made up of 80 houses for sale, 38 affordable homes for council tenants and 63 homes for private rent.
Countryside Properties’ Galton Lock Regional construction director Phil McHugh said: “These young people are proven hard workers and show great promise in the construction industry.
“They have all been sourced through Sandwell Council’s Regeneration Team -Think Sandwell. We have found it a valuable service and look to continue sourcing our apprenticeships via this scheme on other up and coming neighbouring projects.”
