School Offer

Young people are experiencing new challenges every day. Sandwell’s 21st Century Child Programme is a two tier approach, working with both young people and parents/carers, providing an interactive programme to help develop an understanding about the risks associated with alcohol, drugs, crime, social media and other trends. Supporting agencies provide young people with the knowledge and skills to promote staying safe and increasing protective behaviours with their peers.

The main aims of the 21st Century Child are to identify:

  • What the 21st Century Child faces, including the impact of social media, peer pressure, relationships, gang culture; the environment;
  • Who is the 21st Century Child – who are their friends? Who are they talking to online? Which Apps are they using? Who/where/ do they hang out?
  • How does the 21st Century Child behave? – when to be concerned as a parents, e.g. missing school, change in friendship groups, alcohol/drug misuse, unexplained gifts, change in clothing
  • Having those awkward conversations – top tips, researching information together
  • Top Tips – is your child going out? Going to a party? How are they staying safe?
  • How to stay safe – Relationships, self- care, mental health first aid
  • Where to get help

School 21st Century Child carousel:

  • Cannabis trailer – A mock up cannabis factory, encouraging discussion about where cannabis comes from; the dangers associated with cannabis cultivation and fire risks, and the criminal risk associated with this and the impact that drug dealing can have.
  • Go-Kart and beer goggles – Young people ride the go-kart around obstacles and then again wearing the beer goggles – discuss the impact that alcohol/drugs can have on driving, including visual impact and reactions, and the dangers associated with this both as the driver and/or passenger.
  • DECCA – Provide an interactive workshop on alcohol and cannabis
  • Consultation station – providing the opportunity for young people to have their voices heard, raise their concerns and look to address these both in and out of school.
